Postcards from France

Nigel Sabin

1991

About the

work :

Postcards from France is a piece for Viola and Clarinet duo in two movements that depicts a train ride from Brittany to Paris.

I.  Brittany

II. By train to Paris

The work is concerned with bi-tonality, rhythmic contrast and tension and release.

Activity :

As a class, sing the Viola part (b.5-16), then transcribe the melody from treble clef to also clef on the stave provided on p.2 of the Sabin booklet.

Composing :

Using Postcards from France as a model piece, compose a short piece for two contrasting single line instruments. Each instrument line must have a different tonal centre. One instrument must accompany the other using a simple arpeggio figure.
